Senior Care Advice: Headache Relief Tips for Seniors

A headache is a symptom of pain in the head or neck region. It is often caused by skipped meals, processed meats and other foods, lack of sleep, poor posture, stress, and alcohol. Many seniors suffer from headaches and are unsure of how to find relief. As a senior care agency in Dayton and Mason, OH, we recommend these tips to older adults who would like to find relief from their headaches.

Hot or Cold Therapy

When older adults experience a migraine, cold therapy may help. Aides who provide senior care suggest that they place a cold pack on their forehead. A bag of frozen veggies, ice cubes wrapped in a towel, and a cold shower may help as well.

For tension headaches, a heating pad on the neck or back of the head can help. Older adults with sinus headaches should try placing a warm washcloth to the area that’s causing them pain.

Remove the Ponytail, Hat, or Goggles

Senior women with longer hair may face an external compression headache if their hair is in a tight ponytail. Wearing a headband, hat, and even swimming goggles that are too tight can also lead to compression headaches.

Stop Chewing Gum

Chewing gum can hurt an older adult’s head in addition to their jaw. The same holds true for chewing lips, fingernails, or objects such as pens. Therefore, senior citizens should do their best to avoid these chewing tendencies.

Take Medication in Moderation

There is an endless amount of over-the-counter pain medications for various types of headaches. Those who offer senior care encourage older adults to choose liquid medicines over fill since their body will absorb the medication faster. They also suggest that seniors refrain from taking drugs that are made with caffeine or multiple ingredients as they can lead to rebound headaches.

Hot or cold therapy, removing ponytails, hats, and goggles, and taking medication in moderation can all help seniors find relief from the pain and discomfort of headaches.
