Tips for Gently addressing a Loved One’s Resistance to Accepting Help

It happens everyday: A crisis throws a family into the realization that they can no longer ignore the signs of their loved one’s changing needs. Maybe it is a pot left on the stove, or untouched medicine, or even a noticeable absence of personal hygiene. You are at a loss for how to approach your loved one without seeming to be pushing too hard, but you feel responsible and truly want to help. There is a way to gently work through this problem, and move toward the decision you know must be made. It is time to gather up your confi-dence, and with respect and dignity, include your loved one in the decision to find a mutually agreeable solution to this concern. Recognize that we all use the defense mechanism of deni-al when we feel resistant to change…honor that denial with understanding and plunge in to make a difference in the quality of life for the person you care for:

LISTEN…relax and have a good conversation, listening to their concerns and fears

EXPLAIN…simply state your goals for them and your desire to help

INVOLVE…allow them to be involved in the solution process and remain in “control”

GIVE OPTIONS…discuss the viable options and assure them you will be open to “trials” in finding the best solution

BE PATIENT…ake baby steps in making any change. At

Golden Heart Home Care we offer services in increments of time that meet your needs, allowing your loved one to slowly accept the wonderful gift of help

  EMPHASIZE THE POSITIVE…remind your loved one that your goal is see them continue to live in their own home with as much independence as possible while still providing for their safety and comfort.
