Music Therapy for Alzheimer’s Care

Studies in Alzheimer’s care indicate that music can awaken memories. It is mom or dad’s memories that can bringAlzheimer's care them back into your life, the present and become one. When your parent is reintroduced to the music of their era, it stirs up images and thoughts. It has been documented to instill conversation that under other circumstances may leave your parent mute or even agitated.

This same study in Alzheimer’s care provided seniors with iPods and as stated above created a playlist that would take them down memory lane. This research showed that seniors aged 80 and 90 reacted to the music of the 30s and 40s even if they were not interested in the genre when they were younger. For the babyboomers now becoming seniors’ music from the 50s or 60s tends to instill memorable thoughts.

Music whether soothing in tone and rhythm lessened the anxiety, depression, and distance in everyone. The Alzheimer’s care providers found music transported these patients to a happier place. The more comfortable the senior, the easier it is to care for and provide for them, meeting needs they may find their voice to express.

For some with memory loss and cognitive issues, music inspired them to respond to basic tendencies such as bathing, dressing and eating. The rhythm of the music creates a soothing balance that establishes a connection from one activity to another. In fact, the music in some instances reduces the need for medications. The same therapy that reduces the need for medication may eliminate agitated behaviors and anxieties. Therefore a daily dose of music is essential. Locating live music in the Dayton, OH area would be equally beneficial.

Music therapy evokes emotions that produce memories. It is the music in Alzheimer’s care that provides a feeling of life for your loved one. That feeling can give you a glimpse into their world and enjoy the moments you too were thought to be lost.
