The Holidays Aren’t Always the Happiest for Your Parent, Listen to What an In Home Care Provider Shares

Whether it’s a holiday, a birthday, or just a day of family celebration do not expect that your aging parent may react as positively as you may expect or want.  In many instances, the older generation may appear distant, anxious or even depressed, as times are changing for them as they watch the jovial reactions of others.  According to the professional in home care provider in Dayton, in many families, mom or dad (grandma or grandpa) is often forgotten at these celebrations.  Although it is not intentional, the gathering may ignore some essential facts.

If your parent has a caregiver, it is crucial that the caregiver is included.  This individual is an integral part of your loved one’s life, and in many instances, mom or dad has become dependent on them.  If you have hired an in home care provider, who has learned your loved ones wants and needs, they will provide the support that not only your mother or father needs to enjoy their time, but for you and all your guests as well.  It is this individual that communicates with your parent and may understand them better than anyone else.

If your loved one is feeling uncomfortable, give them a choice

Some seniors prefer a small intimate setting and others may do well in a big vociferous crowd.  When making holiday or individual day plans take this into consideration for your loved one.  If mom or dad has a hearing deficiency being in a large room with music, voices, and the clatter of dishes, etc., may cause your loved one anxiety.  An anxious elder may not understand that it is the stimulus around them and may invert or become sad and melancholy.  Before the event, it may be beneficial to discuss the environment with the in home care provider as they may support the decision that your parent may choose not to attend, and that is ok.  The recommendation is to either adjust the environment to provide mom or dad with comfort or have a secondary event, allowing them a choice.
